The Backlash against Arab Americans
On September 11 the World Trade Center dropped to the ground and immediately following went the ethics and morals of dozens of Americas. IT was announced that the perpetrators’ of the attack were of Muslim decent and this ran shock fear and anger down many Americas spines. Many believed that because one Muslim made a bad choice they all must pay and that all Arabs and Muslin Americas were now the “enemy.” Handfuls of acts of violence raised in the weeks following 9-11 all aimed towards those of the Muslim decent. Beatings, bags of blood tossed at immigration centers, shootings and racial slurs took place all over the nation. However, the anger and violence didn’t even stop at Muslims but was taken out on anyone who looked like they could possibly have some physical attribute of Arabs or Muslims. Ashcroft stated, “We must not descend to the level of those who perpetrate Tuesday’s violence by targeting individuals based on their race, their religion, or their natural origin.”

I think it is saddening to realize that the prejudice has still managed to stay within the walls of our country and no matter what it seems like we will never be able to live in peace and remove the problem completely. I remember when 9-11 happened and you would hear all about the prosecution of Muslims and even once my family and I went to the airport and witnessed cruelty. To me it seems that we always need someone to blame and show that “someone” who is the boss and if the real person is not convenient we will blame others until we feel like we have gained the power back and have the upper hand.
